Cardigan "Mary"
It fits perfectly into the springlike season: our new pattern for a cardigan! A light jacket, which is quickly thrown over and also looks casual and elegant.
Are you looking for a nice, easy to sew piece that you can layer through the winter months? A little jacket to throw on and snuggle into? Comfortable but at the same time elegant? Then you'll probably like our newly translated Mary cardigan! With a wide collar and rounded hem, it's a casual piece that you can easily wear with many outfits.
Sewing pattern with video tutorial
In the sewing video for Utensilo (in German) you can see the cardigan in action, and we also have a few photos below of Ina, back in the days where the sun shone and it was possible to go outside without a coat!
Although the pattern may at first look as though it has no variations, there are actually several ways in which you can sew the cardigan.
So many variations
The first option is whether or not you line the front. The lining requires more fabric, but it does mean that you can combine different colours and patterns with each other.
Alternatively, you can sew the cardigan without a lining and finish the edges with a rolled hem. The scarf collar is extra wide and lovely to snuggle into.
The hem is rounded and longer at the back than at the front.
Sewing a rolled hem
To sew the rolled hem, you are best to look in the instruction manual of your sewing machine or overlocker to see which settings will be best for you. For the sewing machine there is probably a special foot you can use. With an overlocker, you will need to reduce the seam width, by moving the knife, and raise the stitch density.
You can use a darning needle or so called 'mending needle' (see below right) to tuck in any loose ends on your rolled hem.
The sleeves
The pattern also contains two sleeve variations. You can decide whether you want the cardigan with slim or slightly wider sleeves. The slightly wider sleeves allow you to easily wear a long sleeved top underneath. Below you can see the wide sleeves
Your favourite collar style
It's also possible to reduce the width of the scarf style collar, if you wish. This is very simple to do and fully explained in the pattern PDF.
In the picture below you can see the collar laid out flat. If you wanted, you could even put a press stud on the front corner and side, so the collar can be worn in this way.
